Delgado’s Allies Led By Nancy Pelosi Are Getting Desperate, Again Run Ad With Claim Debunked By Politifact
Valatie, NY – In a desperate move to prop up a candidate in a can’t lose race for Democrats, Antonio Delgado’s SuperPAC allies are again running ads with claims about an ‘Age Tax’ that were already debunked by Politifact New York, an independent fact checker.
“National leftist Democrats led by Nancy Pelosi are starting to realize that without using false attacks, they have little chance in winning this race. As a result, they are dumping millions of dollars into this race using a verifiably false claim. At this point, they’re just hoping that the press doesn’t point out their false claims to voters. It’s clear that neither out of state carpetbagger Antonio Delgado or his Pelosi-led handlers in D.C. have an iota of respect for Upstate voters.” – Joe Gierut, communications director for the Faso campaign
End Citizens United PAC and Nancy Pelosi’s SuperPAC (House Majority PAC) both are now running ads including attacks centered around an ‘age tax.’ What both of these outside SuperPACs know and hope isn’t pointed out, is that there is no such thing as an ‘Age Tax’ in New York.
Background
Delgado’s ‘age tax’ attack was debunked by Politifact New York as ‘mostly false’ as it ‘glosses over details and ignores critical facts.’ (Politifact New York, 10/03/18)
- “However, the provision didn’t apply to those on Medicare, or people over the age of 50 with coverage through large employers. Also, it wouldn’t have affected New York seniors, as the state has prohibited insurers from charging higher rates based on age since the early 1990s. The claim contains elements of truth but glosses over details and ignores critical facts. We rate it Mostly False.” (Politifact New York, 10/03/18)
Additionally, the ‘age tax’ attack was initially debunked in an article by the Empire Center, and then acknowledged as misleading by the Delgado campaign.
- “Delgado’s spokeswoman, Melissa Toufanian, said two things in response. One was that Delgado was referring to a federal bill with national consequences, even though the altered age rating wouldn’t have applied to New York.” (Times Herald Record, 09/22/18)
“This deceptive argument, coined by AARP last year, is particularly misleading in the context of New York State’s insurance market. Due to a quirk in New York law, the state’s older residents actually stood to save money under the House GOP’s proposal” (Empire Center, 09/05/2018)
- “In New York, however, this ACA rule had no effect, because the state had previously banned age rating completely in the early 1990s.” (Empire Center, 09/05/2018)
“In the context of New York’s insurance market, the PAC’s one-size-fits-all message turns the facts upside-down.”(Empire Center, 09/05/2018)
