Cites Professor’s Opposition to Tax Cap, Support of National Energy Tax Kinderhook, NY — October 12, 2016 … Responding to a barrage of false narratives and negative advertisements from his opponent, the campaign for John Faso today released an ad questioning Professor Zephyr Teachout’s positions on the important issue of taxes. The 30-second ad highlights Ms. Teachout’s opposition to New York’s property tax cap, which in 2015 saved taxpayers $4.5 billion, and her support of a national energy tax — something she flippantly calls a “fee” — that would cost New York families roughly $1,761 a year for using propane, electricity or fueling up their automobiles. “Professor Teachout supports higher taxes on energy and she rejects New York’s property tax cap, which protects taxpayers from runaway spending increases,” said Dain Pascocello, spokesman for the Faso campaign. “Make no mistake, Professor Teachout’s ivory-tower agenda and pie-in-the-sky big government ideas will cost Upstate New Yorkers thousands more each year and it will hit them where it hurts.” View the ad here. Script below: Teachout: “Umm, ah, I’m against the tax cap.” Narrator: New York City professor Zephyr Teachout opposed the property tax cap that saved taxpayers 4.5 billion last year. Teachout: “That’s crazy” Narrator: What’s more crazy, Teachout supports a national energy tax, So propane, home heating oil, filling up your car, even flipping the lights on, will cost families more money. Now that’s crazy. Professor Teachout. A crazy liberal agenda we can’t afford. Teachout: “That’s crazy” John Faso: I’m John Faso, and I approve this message. The ad will run on cable and broadcast television and digital outlets throughout the district. It follows a series of positive spots highlighting Faso’s long-standing commitment to his community — he’s lived here for 33 years — and his fiscal record of cutting taxes and closing budget deficits and outlining his key reform principles to help small businesses, notably simplifying the tax code, ending corporate welfare, investing in small businesses and ending Washington’s regulatory madness. Faso, the Republican, Conservative, Independence and Reform candidate running for Congress in the 19th Congressional District, is running to fill the seat now held by Congressman Chris Gibson (R), who is not seeking re-election. As a member of the New York Assembly, Faso developed and pushed proposals that led to real balanced budgets – including the first reduction in state spending in decades while closing a $5 billion deficit. He championed legislation that made a difference for tens of thousands of families such as the STAR program and education and real property tax reform. A former board member of the Rockefeller Institute of Government, Faso also served for three years as a member of the Control Board that worked to fix the financial and managerial issues of the City of Buffalo and its school system. Mr. Faso and his wife, Mary Frances, a registered nurse, are the proud parents of two children. They have lived in Kinderhook, New York, for more than three decades.
