LETTER: U.S. Rep. John Faso takes stand against fentanyl importation
March 6, 2018

Dear Editor:

There is an important bill grinding its way through the House and the Senate that seeks a technical advantage in stopping the illegal international drug trafficking of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid invented in the 1960s.

This drug is more powerful than morphine and more lethal than heroin. That alone would be terrifying. But by ordering from China, it is possible not only to order illegal doses, it is also likely that you will get a variant that can be 100 times more dangerous than the standard. This is part of why so many people are overdosing in this recent epidemic.

The proposed bill would require importation controls and documentation on international shipments through the U.S. mail.

Thank goodness the bill has so many co-sponsors in the House, like our very own U.S. Rep. John Faso, R-Kinderhook.

Surprisingly, neither New York senator is a co-sponsor in the Senate.

Shouldn’t we slam the door closed on the most obvious route of this killer?
